InsurMark Executives—Steve Kerns and Carolyn Zajac—receive the National Ethics Bureau’s Ethics in Action Award.

HOUSTON, TX. —InsurMark executives Steve Kerns, CEO, and Carolyn Zajac, President, have received the National Ethics Bureau’s Ethics in Action award. The award recognizes individuals whose lives exhibit an unusually strong commitment to ethical personal conduct.

The executives’ commitment to ethics was especially evident in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Because InsurMark is in Houston, a city that put up many hurricane refugees, Kerns and Zajac inspired InsurMark employees to get involved in relief efforts. “We had an integral role in the Katrina disaster,” Kerns says. The relief effort took several forms. InsurMark employees volunteered to help, including three who served as “red shirt” community leaders. InsurMark decided to match dollar for dollar all financial contributions up to $25,000. It also called on its producers to provide funds for hurricane relief.

Katrina wasn’t the only natural disaster for which Kerns and Zajac mobilized their company. Employees also contributed over $20,000 to help the victims of the Southeast Asia tsunami. On a less dramatic level, each year the company “adopts” several local families at Christmas time. It also gives employees two paid days off per year to do community service. “We want our employees to experience what it feels like to get involved with people who need help,” Kerns says.

“Because you express your ethical values so clearly, your contracted agents, your employees—and many others in our business—view you as ethical leaders” said National Ethics Bureau Chairman and Co-Founder Steven R. McCarty. “With InsurMark setting the pace, we are confident the financial services industry will continue to re-commit itself to the three core values you advocate—being “deeply rooted, ever growing, and always serving.”
